PDF indexing isssues

Post by nocar »

I am using MyInfo 8.5.1 [8179]. I am encountering significant problems that impact my ability to continue to use this program to store PDF attachments.

MyInfo 8 is supposed to index PDF attachments to allow Search to find terms in those indexed files. However, for me the program is absolutely inconsistent in its ability to do this. At times, the program works at indexing attached PDFs and other times it does not. In addition, even when it does index attached PDFs initially, several days later when I open that file, searching for terms within the PDF that worked previously, the program no longer finds them. This happens with PDFs that are either imported from a folder, dragged-and-dropped from a folder, or attached within a note.

I have tried reindexing my database to no avail. I have exported the PDFs and reimported them into a new database, but the problem still occurs.

I want to rely on MyInfo to store PDFs, index them and then be able to locate content in them with Search. Being unable to do so significantly limits my use of MyInfo.

Have any other users encountered these types of PDF indexing issues preventing Search from finding content within PDF files?

I'm sorry to read of your problem, nocar.

I have several hundred PDFs spread over multiple notebooks. I have tried to replicate your experience but cannot do so. I have no indexing issues at all, which suggests to me that your problem may be local.

Have you tried the old fallback position of fully uninstalling MI8, cleaning up, downloading and reinstalling a fresh copy of MI8?

Kind regards,

bevanj, thanks for your thoughtful reply.
I haven't yet tried fully uninstalling MI8 and then doing a complete reinstall. Great idea. I will give it a try and hope that it works. And I will let you and others know what happens.
Much appreciated.

To recap, the problem was MyInfo 8 was not indexing PDFs imported into MND files to be able to Search for content in those PDFs. To fix the problem, I went through these steps:

Step 1: Uninstall MI8 app and then reinstall MI8.
Result: MI8 Search would not find content of PDFs in existing MND files.

Step 2: Uninstall MI8 app, delete remnant \AppData\Roaming\MyInfo 8 and \AppData\Local\MyInfo 8 folders, and reinstall MI8.
Result: MI8 Search found content in PDFs but just in a few of my existing MND files and not in most.

Step 3: Export notes and PDFs from faulty MND files, create new MND files and then import the notes and PDFS back into the newly created MND files.
Result: MI8 Search found content in PDFs in all my MND files.

Step 4: Create a new folder within a now functioning MND file and import additional PDFs
Result: Importing 12 new PDFs via Import | Folder and Files from a computer folder did not work. The files were not indexed, and content could not be found by Search. However, dragging and dropping those same PDF files in batches of four did work.

My thoughts are that something corrupted the MI8 program and then many of the MND files created by MI8. What I have now is way better than what I had before. However, based on my Step 4 trial shows that MI8 is not yet functioning as it should. Over the next couple of weeks, I will continue to check my MND files to see whether the current level of functioning continues.

Once again, thanks to bevanj for taking the time to test and to suggest a remedy.
