I have noticed mio files are in fact several zipped database files.
Would it speed-up the user experience if we instead worked directly with a folder containing the database files, or if the zip was with no compression?
I doubt it. We have selected the best speed/size ratio (we use the fastest compressing algorithm), so the slow down of compressing the information is negligible.
