so user can change to other symbols, i.e checkmark, x or whatever

You may have already tried this, but you can put an empty or filled check box next to each document in the treepane... click on the tiny down-arrow to the left and select "task." There you can choose between unchecked and checked boxes.

However, I do agree that putting this as an option into the Yes/No column type would be beneficial. I looked for this a while back even though I knew about the checkbox I described above.
