"Auto Copy" Feature

Post by x-star »

There is a Firefox extension named Auto Copy (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/383/) that adds a very useful feature: when selecting content from a web page, the selection is automatically copied to clipboard. Similar functionality is also present in mIRC, for text only.

The advantage of such a feature is clear: a significant increase in information manipulation speed since you no longer have to press Ctrl+C or use the Copy toolbar button or menu command to place the information on the screen to the Windows clipboard.

It may seem a small feature in theory, but in practice - at least for me - it creates addiction. So much so that I now frequently find myself selecting various information in MyInfo and wonder why I can't paste it elsewhere :o .

Which brings me to the suggestion: I would find such an Auto Copy feature very useful in MyInfo (both in the tree and the text pane) since I use MyInfo not only for depositing information, but also for extracting information from it to be used elsewhere.

Regarding the implementation - assuming of course you give it a green light - it is important to provide a quick way to enable/disable this feature without having to go through additional dialogs. As I see it, you could do this in 4 ways:
1.) a new "Auto Copy" command in the Edit menu, which can be checked/unchecked with a click (like the existing Auto Paste command, with which I think Auto Copy would make a nice pair, by the way :D );
2.) a toolbar button with two states: depressed for Enable Auto Copy, normal for Disable Auto Copy;
3.) a hotkey (fixed or customizable);
4.) an Auto Copy tray icon menu command (again, like the existing Auto Paste command).

Thanks.
