In the Filter Documents screen, you should have a "Show Subdocuments" checkbox. When the user enables this checkbox for a filter, the filter would include all the subdocuments (through an unlimited number of levels) of all filtered items, even if the subdocuments themselves do not satisfy the filtering criteria.
For example, I have a "Projects" filter that shows all documents that include a "projects" tag. However, I don't want to have to assign the "projects" tag to every document within the project. I would like to be able to tag the top-level document as a project and then when I enable my Projects filter, it would show my top-level "projects" documents, along with all their descendents.

Filter, but show Subdocuments

Perhaps a bit more flexibly:
- Filter option: show children
- Filter option: show parents
- Filter option: show columns
In other words, I think the filter result should be able to be viewed just like a normal un-filtered nested structure.
The fact that a filter is ON should be highlighted clearly (e.g. in red somewhere)
