When documents are deleted, moved or modified, do the relevant index entries get deleted/updated? If not, does re-indexing clean them up?

Is it advisible to reindex periodically?

Yes, they are updated. Currently there are some inconsistencies with the indexing, which we are going to address in the next versions, so reindexing from time to time is good thing to do.
