Attachment file extension

I noticed when I attach a file, the file name without extension is taken as the item title. This caused a lot of problems for me since many times I do not know what the extension is any more. Also it caused confusion when I have multiple files with same name but different extension. Is this configurable? I noticed that if I drag an attachment file from Outlook message, the extension is kept.
