Is there any way to type superscript (ie exponentials) or subscript in the text editor?

Yes, there are commands for sub- and superscript. They are not by default on the toolbar, but you can add them:
1. On the Tools meni, click Customize.
2. Click on the Commands tab.
3. Click on the Format category.
4. Find Superscript command in the Commands list.
5. Drag it on the Formatting toolbar.
6. Do 4. and 5. for Subscript too.
7. Click Close.
